Application Instructions
On a properly sanded old surface (P500 grit)
Step 1 : Apply the white basecoat
Mixture: ready to use (already diluted)
Apply several fine coats, with 2–5 minutes between coats
Overcoat with OPAL within 30 minutes.
Step 2 : Apply the OPAL effect coat
Mixture: 100 parts stirred OPAL paint + 50–100 parts thinner
Apply 3 to 5 fine coats, at intervals of 2–5 minutes
Overcoat with clearcoat within 30 minutes.
Step 3 : Apply the clearcoat (3:1 ratio)
Mixture: 100 parts clearcoat + 33 parts hardener + 5–15% thinner (Pot life: 45 minutes)
Apply two full glossy coats with a 10-minute flash-off between coats.
Note :
► The three stages should ideally be applied successively to allow wet-on-wet adhesion. However, if necessary, a full drying period followed by sanding with a grey abrasive pad is possible before proceeding to the next stage.
► The OPAL paint can be applied over any professional-grade white background except waterborne basecoats:
Old glossy opaque white paint (no pearlescent paint)
White primer
Difference Between Classic OPAL and Quasar OPAL
Classic OPALs use very fine synthetic mica particles, offering subtle reflections. These are more affordable shades.
Quasar OPALs have a unique composition based on transparent metals, producing more intense colour reflections and more dramatic colour shifts.
Visual Appearance
Stardust's special OPAL effect is a transparent pearlescent paint containing ultra-fine particles (10–40µm or 10–60µm) that reflect light and create a shimmering effect.
Depending on the angle of view, an OPAL paint can reveal two to four different colours.
Secondary colours are most visible between 0° and 30° viewing angles.
Gloss, Satin, or Matt Finish
We recommend applying a glossy clearcoat to optimise light reflection and enhance the visibility of the OPAL pearlescent effect.
A matt clearcoat is not recommended, as it significantly diminishes the light reflection and the visual impact of the pearlescence.
However, it is possible to use a satin clearcoat with 20° gloss, which can be included in the kit as a replacement for the standard gloss clearcoat.
