Here is a speciality apart, which consists in treating, painting, and customising surfaces mainly in PE, PEHD, and PP, with the other types of motorcycle paints. This category is dedicated to the painting of cross-country motorcycles. As all enduro riders know, motocross is not a delicate sport. Trials events put the riders, their bikes, and their fairings to a very tough test. That doesn’t mean you can’t take care of the design of your cross-country bike with a nice custom paint job.
For those who want to paint their cross-country bike with a special paint in their own colour, you should know that it is perfectly possible, but on a bike with soft plastic fairings.
The surfaces are small (meaning that, in terms of product, one spray can is enough), the shapes and reliefs are interesting to showcase the colour changes and reflections, but the materials are difficult to make adhere and very flexible. By following our instructions to the letter, you will be able to give your cross-country bike a unique look without ever worrying about peeling or degrading your beautiful pearl or Chameleon finish!
Application techniques of motorcycle paints on plastic
Trials have metal tubular frame areas and plastic areas that are often raw and unvarnished. This part is the most delicate to paint:
On the plastic areas, stickers must be removed. For this, a dryer or a heat gun is needed to heat them and remove them easily. You can use anti-silicone degreaser to remove any traces of glue.
Then, the plastic must be “bleached” by rubbing it with an abrasive sponge soaked in body thinner. Yes, this type of plastic is tough and almost impossible to make adhere without these somewhat drastic techniques. Then, it is strongly recommended to quickly pass a blowtorch flame over the surface to make the plastic sweat.
The plastic adhesion promoter is then applied in one or two thin veils.
That’s it. You can apply the cross-country motorcycle paint on the plastic fairings and on the frame, which should be quickly sanded beforehand.
Whatever the cross-country motorcycle paint for plastic is, if it is a single component (1K), it is always very flexible and can withstand, without any problem, the bending of the fairings. It is only in the clearcoats, applied in the very last step, that a special additive must be used to make them very flexible.
Some ideas of personal paints on cross-country bikes
Fluorescent colours are ideal to give a sporty, aggressive, and dynamic character to your bike. The most energising colours are fluorescent green, yellow, orange, and red. The process is simple (white base, followed by fluorescent, followed by clearcoat) and the three steps should be done without delay. You can, of course, apply your stickers before clearcoating.
The Chameleon Extrem option for fairings
Here is a UFO in the world of paint, something that will not go unnoticed: the chameleon effect, formerly known as the beetle effect, is a very special iridescent paint that keeps changing colours depending on the position of the observer looking at the cross-country motorcycle. The choice of colours at Stardust is breathtaking, and some of the shades are truly impressive.
