Primers are not limited to fillers and surfacers, nor only to those designed to provide adhesion on bare metal substrates. There is a suitable primer for virtually every material, such as plastic, glass, carbon fibre, or even leather.
Primers are therefore preparation coats that are most commonly used to ensure proper adhesion of paint to a specific substrate. Without a primer, paint cannot provide a guaranteed level of adhesion and performance over time. In automotive bodywork — as well as in decorative or industrial applications — each product or paint has a distinct role and specific properties. It is rare to find a single product capable of acting as an adhesion promoter, colour coat, and finish coat simultaneously.
Stardust is a company that enjoys collecting and researching specialist products. Beyond the special effect colours for which the company is well known, Stardust has, over the years, developed an impressive range of primers of all types.
Do you have a special substrate to paint — a PVC tarpaulin? Hard chrome? Crystal bottles? A polypropylene tank? ... The list is long, and Stardust can provide a rare and effective solution in nearly every case, whether for private individuals or professional users.
Primers can be applied using spray guns (and even airbrushes or brushes), or using aerosol cans (see our body primer spray category). There are single-component primers that air-dry at room temperature, and more commonly two-component primers that cure rapidly with the addition of a hardener.
We offer, on each product page featuring body primers, complete kit packaging ranging from 300 ml to 8 litres.
The most commonly used and best-known primer is the surfacer. It is available in both thin and high-build versions. It is used to correct slight surface imperfections such as scratches, or to perfect a surface previously repaired with filler.
This type of primer is designed to fill every hole and scratch in the surface and to be partially or entirely removed during sanding, leaving behind a perfectly smooth surface ready for painting.
These high-build products contain a large proportion of fillers, such as talc. They must be applied in thicknesses ranging from 50 to 150 μm to properly fill the surface. Their formulation must ensure that they are easy to sand and therefore not too hard.
A primer is primarily used to level and perfect a surface before painting. While it provides some adhesion, it is not a specialist product for ensuring perfect adhesion on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium or even plastics.
However, there are products — such as STARDUST 2K paint — that can perform all roles simultaneously. These paints are tacky enough to adhere to plastics, steel, and aluminium; they also serve as paint, available in a wide choice of colours (RAL or Pantone); and they can even act as a Topcoat, providing high gloss and resistance to weathering, mechanical wear, and chemical attack.
