Ford is one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers and, since its founding in the early 20th century, has accumulated a vast number of colour references.
The manufacturer's colour palette is not only exceptionally rich in shades, but also in the evocative names assigned to them.
You should know that Ford's international paint code database is divided into three segments : American base, European base, Australian base. This segmentation reflects slight regional variations across continents.
In short, the first step is to locate the correct paint code on your vehicle's bodywork.
Ford's paint code system generally follows international standards, but it does not include some peculiarities - such as single-digit codes like "1", "2", or "3"!
Conversely, within the European, you'll also find more complex codes made up of six alphanumeric characters.
The global system for recording and classifying automotive colours is based on alphanumeric codes, and is universally recognised across manufacturers. Its goal is to eliminate errors at all levels - from manufacturers to dealers, customers, and bodywork professionals. However, since some brands have used identical codes, the industry introduced a second reference: the colour name. This name, in combination with the Ford paint code, serves a dual purpose:
It provides a commercial indentity (often a poetic or dynamic name). It offers a double verification to prevent any risk of confusion between different colours with similar or identical codes.
The Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903. The story began in 1896, when Ford built his first automobile - a quadricycle, not a tricycle like many in Europe at the time.
Based in Detroit, the company has remainded under family control throughout its history. Over the years, Ford has acquired prestigious international brands such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, Rover and Volvo.
For more than 120 years, Ford has navigated through numerous challenges - including the Great Depression and two world wars - becoming one of the most powerful and profitable automotive companies in the world.
Our colour database includes hundreds of Ford paint codes, used across different continents. We prepare paints in solvent-based formulations only, as 1K basecoats or 2K paints.
Note: colours containing metallic or pearlescent pigments are only available as 1K basecoats.
For FORD vehicles, the colour code (VIN plate) can be located in one of the following three places:
- Inside the engine bay
- On the driver's side door (Left)
- On the passenger side door leaf (Right)
Images are provided below to help locate the code.
Ford colour codes are made up of 1 to 6 characters, using letters and/or numbers.
Below is a selection from our paint database, showing examples of Ford colour references, You'll find the code, the name, the origin base (Europe, in this case), and production period.

Today, the Ford paint palette is very different from what it was 20 or 30 years ago. Thanks to the widespread use of pearlescent and aluminum-based pigments, combined with transparent tints, modern Ford colours are much more vibrant, deep, and luminous. And that's exactly what paint is meant to do: attract attention, just like a bee drawn to the petals of a brightly coloured flower.
