As part of repainting a bodywork, the professional in charge of the work will require what are called the colour codes of Asian cars, and among them, the colour codes of Lexus vehicles, in order to determine the composition of the colour and prepare it accordingly.
This paintwork on a vehicle is referred to as a touch-up or a full respray, and must be carried out using an original colour - or a manufacturer-approved shade - precisely determined by the Lexus colour code.
Lexus brand colour codes are considered among the most beautiful in the automotive world. If you haven't noticed it already, pay attention to recent Lexus models when you see them on the road. Under sunlight, you'll immediately notice the brilliance and depth of Lexus colours - unmatched by any other major brand !
For partial touch-up work, an individual equipped with a spray can may be able to carry out the job themselves, from the preparation stage with putty and primer, to paint, and finally to the Topcoat (bodywork clearcoat).
In fact, the application of automotive paint involves several precise stages. It is very rare to achieve a proper result with a single coat. That said, this type of one-coat paint does exist, although it is increasingly rare nowadays - particularly in the case of old opaque Lexus 2K paints.
On Lexus vehicles over 20 years old, you may still occasionaly encounter simple, opaque colours such as white, bright red or other single-stage shades. These are paints of the 2K paint type, mixed with a hardener, which serve both as the paint and the finish - functioning like a tough and resistant clearcoat. However, these basic colours have now disappeared from the modern colour charts of the Japanese luxury brand.
Returning to the matter of Lexus colour codes and the paint repair process: as individuals, we do not have access to professional paint software. We must therefore hand over the paint reference to a professional - either a paint manufacturer or a bodywork specialist - who will determine the appropriate type of paint and application method.
In practice, there are two possible options :
- 1K basecoat, which is a single-component paint followed by a Topcoat.
- Or, in rare cases, a 2K paint, a one-step lacquer with hardener.
If your insurance does not cover the repair and you want to save money by painting your Lexus yourself according to its colour code, the first step is to identify the correct Lexus code. This means locating the metal plate on the body or inside the vehicle where various references are stamped or printed, usually consisting of letters, numbers, or both.
Lexus is a prestigious Japanese brand: it is the luxury division created by Toyota in 1989 to separate the production of premium saloons and sports cars. The project has been a resounding success across all five continents.
Lexus has also produced SUVs and off-road vehicles, offering higher finish and styling standards than the Land Cruiser range. These luxury 4x4s are especially popular in the Middle East and Gulf countries.
In recent years, Lexus has also made a successful entry into the hybrid vehicle sector. By 2019, the Japanese group claimed to have produced nearly ten million vehicles in just 30 years of existence.
For LEXUS vehicles, the VIN plate indicating the colour code can be found in two locations :
- Inside the engine bay
- Printed (or labelled) in the vehicle's service book.
You can refer to the images below, which illustrate the exact location.
The Lexus colour code is always composed of three characters (letters or numbers).
Here is an example, with the code first and the colour name (note that the name itself does not appear on the VIN plate):
3R3 / BARCELONA RED
Among all car manufacturers, it must be said: Lexus designs some of the finest paintwork available today, with exceptional finishes made possible by the use of transparent tints other than opaque ones. The new Lexus paints are always impressive in depth and brilliance. Our company has solid expertise in mixing and replicating colours, especially LEXUS paint.
The most well-known Lexus shades have evolved over the years and across different models. Compared to competing brands, Lexus is a relatively young marque, focused on the luxury saloon segment. A special emphasis is placed on colours creation by the Lexus design teams.
Here are some modern Lexus colours in shades of red or deep red:
Lexus colour code Lexus colour name
3T1 AGRUME
AUB AUBERGINE
ZYY AUTUMN BLAZE RED
KEE RED
3R3 BARCELONA RED
3P6 BLACKISH RED
Some colours are shared with Toyota, Lexus' parent brand. However, certain shades - such as the most recent Lexus reds - are exclusively reserved for the Lexus range.
It's important to note that today's automotive paints are fundamentally different from those used 20 years ago.
We are not just talking about water-based vs solvent-based compositions, but about the formulation techniques that allow light to pass through transparent or reflective pigments, producing spectacular visual effects. These deep pearlescent paints with luminous finishes simply did not exist two dacades ago.
