Clearcoat is the top coat, the outer coating of a scooter body paint system, which consists of several coats. The Clearcoat, for all types of scooter paint, has a dual purpose, both bright and attractive and at the same time protective, blocking scratches, water and sun. On all scooters, there is a Clearcoat applied over a pearlescent or metallic paint. Sometimes it is a matte scooter Clearcoat.
If you are undertaking a repair and refurbishment job after scratches, it is always imperative to apply a Clearcoat over the paint. If you are not repainting, because the marks have not reached the paint coat, then you only need to do a gentle sanding with water, using sandpaper and a little water, and then sanding gently in a circular motion.
Usually, it is advisable to varnish the whole part, not just one area, to avoid having a visible seam.
2K Scooter Paint : Mixing and Application
The mixing is done with a hardener. Even if the product is offered in an aerosol can, there is a hardener that allows the curing reaction that is typical of professional finishes. It is not recommended to work with a single-component product sold in stores.
The dilution serves to make the mixture thinner and allows it to smooth out on the paint.
Once the hardener is added, the mixture has a short pot life, so it is necessary to apply the product after 5 minutes of rest, on the correctly sanded, degreased and dusted fairing parts.
To successfully varnish a scooter:
The gesture, the speed of motion, the distance and the angle to the support are the four secrets to achieve a beautiful Clearcoat on a scooter paint, whether you paint with a spray gun or an aerosol.
A first coat is applied to the scooter parts. The coat should be glossy and it will become taut after a few seconds. The second coat is applied after 7 to 10 minutes.
The varnishing of a scooter paint is really the most delicate and difficult practice because it is a matter of aiming just between lack (orange peel) and excess (drips).
Matte effect clearcoats : the trend on original scooters
When the Clearcoat does not form like a wet coat with a light sheen on the surface of the body, then it is a matte Clearcoat. These coatings are varied and range from medium gloss to 0% reflection, with total light absorption.
The aesthetic and visual effect is very interesting: it gives the impression of a soft and silky surface. Scooter matte Clearcoats are becoming more and more popular, as they are supplied as standard by new scooter brands.
How to make a clearcoat connection on a part ?
This is not the best idea. First of all, it is not an easy technique, and why go to all the trouble to make a joint with a product or by polishing, when all you have to do is varnish the whole fairing part to have a finished, perfect and complete part.
There are two ways to make a connection: either just after varnishing, with the spraying of blender on the contours of the freshly varnished area, or after it has dried thoroughly, with a polishing action on the edges of the varnished area.
