To do a paint job, both a touch up and a complete paint job, you have to order the mixed paint according to the color codes of Asian motorcycles and among them, the color codes of Sym motorcycles. Sym color codes can be prepared in aerosol or paint cans.
o order online, simply go to the SYM paint page and choose from the available formats, from 250 ml to 2 litres. You must send us your SYM colour code after placing the order, by e-mail.
As for the quantity of SYM paint to order, plan for approximately 250 ml for a maximum of 1 m². One square metre typically corresponds to a full tank. For a large motorcycle, you'll need around 1 litre of ready-to-use paint (we offer a 1-litre kit including 500 ml of paint and 500 ml of thinner).
The paints we sell to the general public are professional-grade, solvent-based paints. Since this type of paint is solvent-based, it is flammable and hazardous. However, these paints are easier to apply than water-based body paints. They dry very quickly, are resistant to sagging, and offer a very long lifespan — estimated at up to 20 years.
If you have a spray gun, we strongly recommend choosing paints in cans. Cans offer better application precision compared to aerosols. Also keep in mind that aerosol cans mostly contain propellant gas, and only about 100 ml of actual paint. For this reason, aerosols are not economical, and much better results can be achieved with a spray gun.
For those who don’t have a spray gun, we also offer paints and clearcoats in a two-component version (i.e., with integrated hardener). The result obtained with our aerosols is very close to that of professional body shops.

Paints from this manufacturer are “matt base” paints: these are single-component paints, meaning they do not require a hardener. However, they must be clearcoated. The clearcoat provides both the gloss finish and resistance to external damage and ageing (such as weather, friction, or fuel exposure).
Matt base paints dry very quickly in the air, whereas 2-component paints cure through a chemical reaction with a hardener — such is the case for bodywork clearcoats and 2K primers.
The two steps of a two-layer paint process — basecoat followed by clearcoat — must be performed in quick succession, with no more than 20 to 30 minutes between them. This allows the clearcoat to adhere properly to the basecoat without sanding. If you plan to apply decals, they should be placed during this window. Waiting longer is not recommended, as the clearcoat may no longer adhere and sanding will then be required. However, sanding modern paints (such as pearlescent or metallic paints) is not advised. If you must do so, use an abrasive sponge only — never use abrasive sheets.
SYM brand paints may require a specific primer. Indeed, modern colours — especially most new SYM colour codes — have pearlescent or metallic effects with a degree of transparency. Therefore, in some cases (depending on the specific SYM colour), it is necessary to choose the correct primer. We offer different shades of grey referenced by manufacturers, as well as white and black primers for certain colours.
If you want to order your SYM paint but do not know which primer to choose, simply send a message to our colour department (colors@stardustcolors.com) to request the correct primer reference.
There are special cases known as “three-coat paints” (or tri-coats). These require three stages: a specific undercoat, the base colour, and then the clearcoat. If your SYM motorcycle uses a three-layer system, you will need to order three products instead of two.
The history of the manufacturer Sym
SYM stands for "Sanyang Motor." This Taiwanese brand was founded in 1954 and manufactures motorcycles, scooters, and quad bikes (ATVs).
Originally, the company planned to produce electric motors and dynamos to be installed on bicycles during the 1950s. Thanks to several partnerships, particularly with Honda, SYM quickly began producing motorcycles and even cars.
SYM also manufactures small vehicles for the Hyundai brand as a subcontractor. Although its headquarters are in Taiwan, the company also has factories in XIAMEN, China.
In the early 2000s, SYM scooters were distributed in the United States. After some difficult years, a new exclusive distribution agreement was signed, and a 21,000 m² factory was built. However, the brand suffered a major setback in 2010 when a fire destroyed nearly 3,000 new SYM scooters. An investigation later revealed the fire had been caused by arson.
The Japanese scooter market proved more promising, and SYM experienced stronger development there — particularly after opening a factory in Nagoya in 2006.
Where to find the colour code of your Sym motorcycle ?
Finding a colour code is easy for a car — but much harder for a motorcycle or, even more so, for a scooter.
This is because the colour reference is never written on the scooter — not on the engine, the fairings, or the chassis. No official documents provide this information either.
You will need to contact your dealer, who may be able to research and identify the colour reference used on your SYM scooter. If they cannot help, your last resort will be to browse online forums, particularly English and Chinese communities. These SYM-focused forums often contain shared information from users around the world that could help you identify your colour code.
Our team is available to check and validate your colour code. It is common that not all SYM colour codes are available — quite simply because not all SYM colours have been reproduced yet, especially given that this brand is not widely present in France or the European market.
The iconic colours of Sym motorcycles
SYM colours are fairly classic and do not include any shades that are officially recognised as iconic for the brand.
That said, we are proud to maintain one of the largest databases of colours from this Taiwanese manufacturer. All our colours have been faithfully recreated to perfectly match the original shades.
Here is an extract from our colour system, showing how a SYM colour code and name are typically structured. Each reference starts with the two letters “SY”, followed by four digits. Colour names are often in Italian.
The term “MET” refers to a metallic colour.
