You just need to know the reference from among the colour codes of other European cars and, in particular, the Volvo colour codes, and then send it to us by email immediately after placing your order.
On the two-coat paint / 1K basecoat to clearcoat page:
All you need to do is choose the packaging. The packaging of your Volvo colour code paint determines both the form in which the product is supplied (aerosol or can of paint) and the quantity (by volume, not by weight).
To determine how much paint you will need for your Volvo vehicle, you should roughly estimate the surface area in square metres:
For example, a wing = 0.5 m²
For example, a bonnet = 2 m²
The average coverage of paints is approximately 5 m² per diluted litre. Based on this average coverage, you can estimate your needs: for example, for a 2 m² bonnet, 500 ml should suffice (you should always allow for a slight excess).
Among our range of options — from the 400 ml aerosol through to the 250 ml can, and up to the 2-litre kit — there are diluted versions (ready to use, as they already contain thinner), as well as pure versions which include undiluted paint plus a separate thinner (this applies only to the 2L or 10L kits).
It is perfectly possible to achieve excellent quality paintwork without being a professional painter or having professional facilities such as a spray booth or workshop. Naturally, this applies only to painting or touching up small parts. You cannot carry out a full respray without a proper paint booth.
To minimise airborne dust, you can wet the walls and floor and paint on a temperate, windless day.
The key to success in painting — whether for a professional or an amateur — is strict adherence to all the technical guidelines for using and applying the paint.
Paintwork from the 2000s onwards, and Volvo colour codes, are no exception and consist predominantly of pearlescent and metallic finishes. These Volvo paints are produced by us on the day of your order. They are formulated in what is known as a 1K basecoat to clearcoat version: these paints corresponding to the Volvo 1K colour code (for single component) represent around 90–95% of contemporary paints (the remainder consists of 2K paints).
They are particularly easy to apply: fluid, very thin, with exceptionally fast drying times, and therefore not prone to runs.
They are applied simply, by spraying several very thin coats with a spray gun, with a maximum flash-off time of one to two minutes between coats. When using an aerosol, you cannot achieve very thin coats — rather, you apply quick coats.
Application of the 1K basecoat must always be followed by the application of a Topcoat (bodywork clearcoat), which provides gloss and protection.
Volvo is a Swedish car manufacturer. Its production is regarded as part of the luxury vehicle segment, yet most of its ranges are offered to the general public at relatively affordable prices. The brand dates back to 1915. However, the first vehicles intended for the general public were produced twelve years later, in 1927, with the launch of the Volvo OV4.
Since 1999, the automotive manufacturer Volvo Cars (dedicated to car production) and the parent company (which builds machinery, trucks, buses, and even railway carriages) have operated separately.
It was around this time that Volvo was acquired by the American car giant Ford. Over the past 25 years, Volvo has changed hands several times — notably passing through the ownership of Rover, and more recently Tata Motors of India.
This pattern of buying, selling, and merging is common in the automotive industry, where consolidation is often the only way to survive in a market that demands constant cost reduction.
The Swedish company is demonstrating strong ambitions in the field of sustainability and is transforming its offering, having announced the full transition of its production to electric vehicles by 2030.
It has also begun major investments in several gigafactory projects for the production of electric batteries, in partnership with another automotive company.
For VOLVO vehicles, the plate showing the colour code (VIN plate) can be found in two locations:
– Inside the engine compartment
– Between the two doors on the right-hand side (passenger side)
You can refer to the images provided below which illustrate the location.
The colour code always consists of three to five characters.
Here are some examples of Volvo colour codes:
03650 SEAWOLF BLUE VOLVO 2004 -
03689 GRAY VOLVO 2019
042 CALIFORNIAVIT VOLVO 1967 – 1983
Please note that only the numerical colour code appears on the vehicle body. The colour name does not appear on the bodywork, nor is it mentioned on the vehicle registration document.
Our bodywork paints are sold in cans (for spray gun application) or in aerosols. Clearly, we recommend spray gun application, which produces better results and is more economical.
The Nordic White used on Volvo vehicles is the brand’s emblematic colour. Today, many modern, luxury SUVs from the brand are finished in this shade.
Several more sophisticated colours exist, including finishes requiring two separate coats plus a clearcoat — for example, Volvo’s Cream White.
Our database of Volvo paint references is remarkably comprehensive, as it is updated weekly and includes the latest modern colour formulations.
If you have any doubts about the validity of a colour code, or if you know only the name of the colour, we can check our database of formulas to confirm your colour code.
If you have any questions, please contact us at colors@stardustcolors.com and our colour specialist will reply within 8 hours maximum (7 days a week).
