Read moreWhen you go to your garage or to your bodywork specialist following a minor scratch you want to remove, or an impact on the bodywork, this professional will consult the colour codes of French cars, and more specifically the colour codes of Renault cars, from a database containing hundreds of Renault colour codes and original paint formulas.
The Renault manufacturer assigns a colour code to each vehicle shade and compiles them in its Renault paint lists, which cover nearly 70 years of automotive production.
If you wish to save some money and do without garage services, it is possible to divide the cost of a touch-up by five by purchasing the paint yourself from a professional bodywork paint supplier and doing the job yourself.
Carrying out touch-up paintwork is within reach for anyone once you have your Renault colour. You can use a spray gun if you have one, or simply aerosols.
With a few cans of paint and Topcoat, and a bit of sandpaper, it is perfectly possible to repaint a car wing and achieve excellent results—even without a paint booth.
If you are unfamiliar with the paintwork technique, it costs nothing to take 5 minutes to read and study the relatively simple application methods provided by professional online retailers.
If we take the example of the most well-known and best-selling model from the diamond brand—the Clio—here is a sample paint reference from a RENAULT CLIO :

We can see two types of information: the code and the name (“Black Star Met” means metallic). Both are valid for searching in a professional paint formulation system.
In general, the Renault colour code can be found quite easily by carefully checking certain locations on the vehicle (see next paragraph).
The paint, made according to the original Renault colour code, takes the form of what is professionally called a 1K basecoat: this is a ready-to-use single-component paint, applied using a spray gun, and it must be finished with a Topcoat.
To summarise: first the 1K basecoat is applied, and then, immediately after, the Topcoat (bodywork clearcoat), which serves both an aesthetic function—thanks to its gloss—and a protective one, guarding against water, scratches, and all kinds of aggressors that may damage Renault paintwork and metal bodywork.
Renault, founded in 1898, has lived through more than a century of French history—including two world wars, labour strikes, and nationalisations.
Originally a family business called “Renault Frères” ("Renault Brothers"), the company changed hands and structure several times, adapting remarkably well to various crises. In 1990, it finally stabilised as a public limited company (SA).
The first Renault models appeared at the dawn of automotive history. They were built on tricycle frames, with minimal bodywork, but featured a real gearbox.
At the time, these vehicles were seen as luxury items, accessible only to the wealthiest.
A hundred years later, the Clio was born and produced by the tens of millions.
For RENAULT vehicles, the plate indicating the colour code (VIN plate) is located :
- On the front right-hand door frame (passenger side)
You can refer to the images below that illustrate this location.
The colour code always consists of three characters (letters or numbers).
How to provide your Renault colour code?
It’s very simple: during the ordering process, a comment window will appear. You can enter your colour code there.
If no code is provided, our colourist can try to search for it, but there is no guarantee we will find the exact shade.
France’s number one car manufacturer, Renault, has released several hundred paint shades since the launch of the Renault 4CV in 1946.
Renault paints are carefully prepared in our laboratories by a professional colourist using reference software that is regularly updated.
Manufacturer colours for cars and motorbikes are made using a binder base (1K basecoat or 2K paint), pearlescent or aluminium pigments, and opaque or transparent dyes.
Here are some of the most well-known Renault colour codes, randomly selected from a database of nearly 200 entries:*
