Millions of cars circulate in our country, which naturally generates a large amount of work for bodywork and paintwork companies. For this reason, the colour codes of French cars—in this case, the colour codes of Peugeot cars—are frequently requested by our customers for colour matching.
The automotive paint market is based on hundreds of colour codes issued by manufacturers such as Peugeot. Nearly 90% of car paints are used by industrial paint manufacturers, where Peugeot colour code paints are applied by robots.
Only 10% of the paint volume used in the country each year is applied outside industrial facilities. This means that the thousands of small garages and bodyshops across the country need small quantities for paint touch-ups on limited areas of the car, such as a wing or a mirror—and sometimes even for a complete respray. This is referred to as a full paintwork.
As with all car and vehicle manufacturers, the classification of colours follows an established and harmonised system used worldwide.
The code that identifies a specific paint includes its shade, type, year, and brand affiliation. It consists of a combination of letters and numbers.
Each Peugeot colour code is also associated with a descriptive name—usually a group of words and adjectives. This international system helps to prevent errors during purchasing or repair, since any mistake in paint selection could lead to significant consequences. That is why a global organisation classifies and lists each Peugeot colour code going back many decades.
Of course, this does not mean the formulas are public. Each Peugeot colour code corresponds to a complex and confidential blend of master colours.
If some paint manufacturers are able to reproduce Peugeot paints using their colour codes, it is only because they are counter-typed—in other words, reproduced through colour matching. This is perfectly legal and common practice.
Peugeot is a French family business founded more than 200 years ago—just 20 years after the French Revolution! Like many modern automakers, its origins had nothing to do with cars.
Peugeot was originally involved in steelworking and operated a hydraulic mill. In 1889, the company introduced its first steam-powered tricycle—a technological marvel of its time, with carriage-like wheels and a chain-driven rear axle.
After World War II, Peugeot launched its first mass-produced car: the Peugeot 203, released in 1948. This marked the era of the monocoque body, and it came equipped with a V-shaped engine.
In 1972, Peugeot created the world’s shortest car—the Peugeot 104.
The brand’s greatest success came in 1983 with the release of the Peugeot 205, which became France’s best-selling car of all time.
Our company manufactures all original equipment paints in its own colourimetry laboratory.
We offer only solvent-based paints.
For Peugeot vehicles, the plate indicating the paint colour code (VIN plate) can be found in three different locations:
– Inside the engine compartment
– On the left front door frame (driver’s side)
– On the pillar of the left front door (driver’s side)
You can refer to the images below that illustrate the location.
The Peugeot paint colour code always consists of a few characters (letters or numbers).
Here are a few randomly selected examples from our database dedicated to the Peugeot brand:

We offer the full range of Peugeot paint references, with our permanent paint stock available in aerosol, 1K basecoat, or 2K paint versions (except for metallic and pearlescent colours, which are only available as 1K basecoats to be finished with a Topcoat).
