Chevrolet is an American brand, and its presence in the French vehicle market is well established. As a result, American car colour codes, and in particular Chevrolet colour codes, are widely referenced and known across the databases of most European independent paint manufacturers.
Ordering a paint using a Chevrolet colour code is relatively easy and quick: you can place your order online and receive it within 24 to 48 hours. The only requirement for individuals is to have the correct colour code. Finding this Chevrolet code is simple if you know where to look - we explain the locations further down in this document.
Outside of manufacturing plants, these paint references are mainly used by professional bodyshops for repairs.
Body painters know where to locate the references and use complete mixing systems for colour matching. Each setup resembles a cabinet filled with concentrated tints, connected to a computer that provides the exact measurements to create the colour.
These colour matching systems are provided by independent paint brands that have previously done the meticulous work of collecting colour samples, matching them and compiling formulation recipes.
Today, the vast majority of Chevrolet vehicle paints are metallic or pearlescent. Gone are the days of simple, opaque solid colours on bodywork. Modern shades are more complex and, naturally, more visually striking.
They are made up of reflective pigments based on synthetic mica or aluminum, combined with concentrated transparent or opaque tints.
As a result, modern paints used on cars are always applied in two stages: a base, followed by a topcoat. So if you wish to order paint using a Chevrolet colour code, please not that you will not find a 2K paint. Chevrolet paints are formulated from colour code recipes and are supplied - in over 90% of cases - as 1K basecoats version.
The paint may be either waterborne or solvent-based, but it will always be single-component and must be varnished. Chevrolet colour codes are often shared with those from General Motors, the parent brand, and with Daewoo, a long-time manufacturing partner in Korea.
In everyday speech, the brand is affectionately called "Chevy". Chevrolet is one of the most iconic names in American automotive history - a true legend. The company was created in 1911 in Detroit by Louis Chevrolet in collaboration with William Durant, the founder of General Motors. In its early years, Chevrolet competed with Ford to offer affordable cars to the mass market and saw huge success, becoming the top-selling car brand in the United States during the 1930s.
In Europe or Asia, Chevrolet formed partnerships with other manufacturers such as Daewoo and Opel, contributing to the development of its global footprint. Over the decades, the brand has released several well-known models such as the Tahoe, Trailblazer, Impala, Captiva, and the Firenza CanAm.
There is little difference between Asian, European or American Chevrolet models in terms of the location of the VIN plate containing the paint code.
For Chevrolet vehicles, the VIN plate can be found in two places:
- On the front crossmember inside the engine bay
- Inside the glove box
You can refer to the illustrations provided below to help you locate it.
Chevrolet colour codes are typically composed of three to six alphanumeric characters.
Over the past 70 years, Chevrolet has released nearly 300 colour codes, varying by model and year.
As with other manufacturers, Chevrolet colour references always consist of both a code and a colour name, which helps to avoid confusion and aids in classification. Here are some examples of Chevrolet colours. It is worth noting that the codes often appear to be created freely and do not always follow the pattern :
Chevrolet code | Color name |
