Oil Slick Patina - Oil effect

The Oil Slick patina is a decorative surface treatment to be applied manually by dabbing and polishing on the prepared surface*. Oil Slick is an exclusive feature of StardustColors.

The visual effect obtained is a sparkling mirror surface, with changing colors depending on the point of view. The finish obtained with the Oil Slick patina resembles a chrome chameleon mirror effect paint.

Non-flammable and non-hazardous product : 0% VOC according to European directive (1999/13/EC)

Applications and possible uses :

Oil Slick is a « special effect patina » that can be applied to any surface or material previously primed and prepared with our ST8900X gloss clearcoat.

The product is perfectly resistant to UVs and is suitable for exterior use once varnished.
It is suitable for bodywork, but also for decoration, architecture, or ceiling.

It keeps its mirror effect once varnished.

Colors :

It is possible to use several colors on the same part, in order to multiply the color changes.
A single Oil Slick paint can create a variation of 4 to 6 colors on its own.

Summary of the application process :

the patina is a three-step system :

1 – Base coat ST8900X, then dry for 48H minimum*.

2 – Patina, then drying for 15 minutes.

3 – Varnishing

Special features of the application :

Phase "2" of the patina is applied manually, by a circular polishing action, using a special hydrophilic polyurethane sponge, available in 2 sizes on our website.

The size of the object to be treated is limited by this particular technique, which consists of treating an area of 10 cm by 10 cm, then moving forward area by area.

The technique is suitable for bicycle frames, helmets, motorcycle tanks, bottles and flasks.
It is more difficult to treat a piece of furniture or a complete car.

10 g = 1 sq. m.

Resistance :
The level of resistance of this « oil slick » mirror chameleon effect is excellent once varnished.
Abrasion, weather and chemical resistance is provided by the top coat. The product has a perfect resistance to sunlight.

Topcoat :

Varnishing can be done with any type of good quality topcoat. It is advisable to use a glossy topcoat of body type.
Our ceramic clearcoat ST8900X can be used as a top coat as well as a glossy undercoat.

*The background

It is important to have a very glossy and hard background :

Any type of glossy topcoat can be used as long as it can withstand the friction with the patina which is a solvent-based product. If the topcoat is not resistant enough or if it is not dry enough, then it may start to « curl ».

We strongly recommend the use of our ceramic topcoat ST8900X which is the only one to allow the best results and the fastest curing of the base (24 / 48h)

Patina Oil Slick : Detailed application instructions and important explanations

1 / three important points to achieve a good base

Color : the recommended standard color is black, for all OIL SLICK colors, except for MOTHER OF PEARL, for which a white background must be used.

Please note : unpredictable and visually interesting color effects can be obtained by using a color different from black, for example : gray, navy blue, pink, yellow, red...

Gloss : To obtain a beautiful effect, it is important that the base is perfectly shiny, without dust, grain, or « orange peel » defects

Hardness : This depends on the drying and curing time of the glossy base, but also on the type : for this it is imperative to use a very hard two-component product. The harder the base, the better the mirror effect. On the contrary, if the base is not very hard, you will obtain a blurred patina effect.

Important : We recommend the longest drying time for the base (minimum 48-72 hours) so that it does not react with the Oil Slick paint when rubbed with a sponge, as it contains solvents.

2 / applying the mirror chameleon patina

The product is available in a can, in the form of an ultra concentrated paste, without waxes or silicones.
With the tip of the sponge you take a little patina and rub in a quick circular motion with the sponge until you obtain a homogeneous surface, with a covering color, and without sponge marks or transparency.

It is important to make a perfect polishing of the product on the glossy undercoat within a maximum of 30 seconds, to avoid its evaporation and the formation of marks.

In case of lack, it is always possible to apply a second coat.

Allow to dry for 15 minutes then varnish.

3 / Final step : Topcoating

Varnishing does not affect the mirror effect of the chameleon mirror patina.
It is applied in the classic way in two coats.
It is advisable to apply a micro coat of primer before applying the two glossy coats.
