Description

The term effect paint refers to any paint that creates an unusual visual appearance. In the case of the Black Interference effect, it is a product developed exclusively by Stardust®, consisting of a deep black colour that is completely transparent and capable of reacting to light, reflecting a coloured tone different from the base black (hence the name Interference).

Visual aspect

This is a kind of colour-shifting chameleon effect that makes the surface alternate between black and coloured tones.

The visible colour is created entirely by light reflection. The colour appears at certain viewing angles and only in the presence of direct light (sunlight, lamp, etc.). In shade or diffuse light (e.g. cloudy sky), the surface remains black.

Colour choice:

Selection is made by email after ordering. The colour chart can be downloaded as a PDF at the bottom of the page.

What is included in the offer:

The complete BI Bike Kit allows you to paint an entire bicycle (frame and fork). It is available in aerosol or spray gun versions.

Application at a glance:

Three steps, to be carried out consecutively if possible, using the “wet-on-wet” technique:

Black Base → BI Paint → Clearcoat

BI Aerosol Kit

2 aerosols of black base

1 aerosol of Black Interference paint (colour of your choice)

2 aerosols of UHS** Clearcoat

BI Kit in a can

250 ml of black base paint*, or

125 ml of Black Interference paint* (choice of colour)

800 ml of Clearcoat (500 ml UHS clearcoat + 175 ml standard hardener + 125 ml thinner)

The can kit offers more product for a better price. The aerosol version is more expensive due to the format.

* Pre-diluted solvent-based paint. No mixing required.

** UHS = Ultra High Solid, a superior-quality Topcoat offering extra thickness and strength.

Quantity :

The kit is designed to allow for application of the black background, one or two veils of Black Interference paint, and a beautiful Clearcoat in two layers.

A small quantity of Black Interference paint is provided — this is normal, as only a minimal amount should be applied, not exceeding two ultra-thin veils.

Instructions for the application

Step 1 - Preparation of the substrate.

For existing paint, lightly sand with P500 paper.

If the old paint is uneven or badly damaged, apply a primer surfacer in spray or can.

If the substrate is bare carbon or bare metal, use an appropriate primer to ensure adhesion ( see Primers for Bikes category.)

Degrease and remove dust.

If the base is an old, sound, and smooth paint, a light sanding with P500 is sufficient before painting.

Step 2 - Painting the base

Apply the black basecoat in a few thin passes, allowing 1–2 minutes between coats. Proceed to Step 3 within 30 minutes to ensure adhesion without sanding.

Step 3 - Applying the Black Interference paint :

Apply one or two light veils. Do not overload or apply too much paint.

Before drying, the BI paint already displays a wet look finish similar to the final colour-shifting effect after Clearcoating. This makes it easy to judge if an additional ultra-thin coat is needed — it is not possible to go back once dry.

Go directly to Clearcoating, unless you wish to apply adhesives: in that case, allow the paint to dry for 20 minutes, apply the adhesives, then varnish.

Step 4 - Clearcoating

Aerosol version: Activate the hardener and use the aerosol within 30 minutes.

Can version: Mix 3 parts Clearcoat with 1 part hardener, thinning 5–15% maximum.

Apply two coats at 10-minute intervals, then allow 24 hours for full drying.

What happens if too much paint is applied?

Applying excessive BI paint will diminish the black background effect.
