More info

HIKARI Liquid Mask forms, after drying, a flexible and transparent masking film for model making and mock up, especially for Radio Controlled Vehicles.

HIKARI Liquid Mask is a temporary coating easy to apply with an airbrush or a spray gun, intended for masking and protection, especially over LEXAN

Qualities

  • Its water-based, ammonia-free, silicone-free acrylic composition ensures that the liquid mask will not cling, stain, or contaminate, and will not react with raw or painted backgrounds.

  • Its formula makes it easy to dilute the product and rinse the airbrush with water. The Liquid Mask contains no solvents or ammonia.

  • HIKARI Liquid Mask forms a dry and transparent film, very flexible and easily peelable, which can be safely applied on Lexan, as well as on paint, without tearing off the paints when removing it. It is therefore easy to remove and does not stain.

  • Unlike highly elastic latex-based liquid masks, HIKARI liquid mask does not stretch excessively elastically when cut with a scalpel.

  • The liquid mask has a good resistance to water and chemical agents (paints and lacquers based on solvents). It can be tinted at will.

  • Without silicone, it does not contaminate the bodywork.

Transparency
Transparency allows to draw on the outside of the lexan radio controlled model fairings and to see and cut out the different masking areas, when applying the different color layers.
In order to create cutting lines with the craft scalpels, the decors can be drawn on the hull, or on the dry liquid mask, or even on the paints.

Compatible materials:

Metals, plastics (lexan, PP, PE, ABS, PS, PC), smooth cardboard, wood, glass and ceramic
As a precautionary measure, it is important to test new substrates

Use

Mixing :

The liquid mask is ready to use for application with 0.5 mm or more nozzles. It can be simply diluted with water in a proportion of about 5 to 15%, for use with thinner airbrushes.

Application :

On the dry, dusted basecoat. Apply 3 coats.

Apply 1 thin coat of primer then two coats with a pneumatic gun or airbrush, 2-5 minutes apart. Do not overload to avoid dripping, which can create cutting difficulties.

A high thickness of 60 to 100 µm wet (2 to 3 coats) is recommended to facilitate the removal "without breaking", even more so if you are going to apply coats of paint on top.

It is possible to work on the dry liquid mask, or to cover it without time limit. After several days it is easy to remove.

When painting it, it is important not to let the paint dry for a long time so that it does not harden.

Application can be done with a brush.
• Tip: it is important to apply a very thick layer, if you want to be able to remove the dry film without it tearing

What is the advantage of using a liquid mask on the hull of a radio-controlled model ?

To choose specific areas for decoration, adhesive masking is usually used (paper tape, PVC adhesive mesh, and clear repositionable adhesive film such as Frisket).

This technique is not possible on curved or complex surfaces.

Liquid Mask can be applied directly and quickly to any shape, which is an unbeatable advantage over other masking techniques.
