Description

Marblizer is one of Stardust®’s most spectacular exclusive ‘special effects’ paint finishes for fairings. On this page, we describe the process and the steps involved.

The kit includes:

  • 2 cans of P410 two-component black primer
  • 3 cans of Marblizer
  • 3 cans of two-component Candy clear coat*

Choice of colours (download the Candy colour chart PDF from this page to choose your clear coat colour. The Marblizer colour is a silvery grey quite similar to aluminium, as shown on the colour chart)

*A polyurethane product is described as ‘two-component’ because it must be used with a hardener to polymerise and cure.

♦Spray gun version available here with the ‘Marblizer motorbike kit

How to apply Marblizer Candy paint to a scooter?

Step 1 – Prepare the surface (with fairing parts removed) carefully by cleaning, degreasing and then sanding thoroughly with P320 sandpaper

Step 2 – Apply the black 2C primer, after shaking the aerosol can**

The primer will form the black base required for applying the next coat. (Marblizer is a whitish product that will appear silvery on top of the black base). However, it is also a thick, self-levelling product that will create a solid, smooth base.

As the spray is 2C (two-component), it must be used within 2 hours of being activated (mixed with the hardener)

Drying takes a minimum of 2 hours at 20°C. The parts can then be sanded using P500 sandpaper.

Step 3 – Apply the Marblizer:

The Marblizer special-effect paint is applied in a single coat to create a thick layer.

The painter quickly places a sheet of cellophane film over the wet paint, allowing the film to settle naturally. This ensures natural and interesting patterns. When the cellophane film is removed, the pattern is revealed. At this point, the painter must quickly assess whether it is necessary to reapply the film – this time actively, by positioning and/or dabbing it – either to remove excess product or to interweave the patterns to make them more complex and refined.

Marblizer dries slowly, which means you can work on the paint whilst it is still liquid for a few seconds before it becomes tacky. To make the most of this, strips of cellophane should be prepared in advance and kept to hand near the bodywork parts to be covered

At 20°C, the product is touch-dry in 15 minutes

Step 4 – Apply the Candy clear coat

Marblizer can be clear-coated directly, without sanding, within 30 minutes at the very most. After 30 minutes (give or take, depending on the temperature), you must re-establish the conditions for good adhesion by light sanding with a grey abrasive pad

Candy varnish is a professional two-component boat varnish: once the hardener has been added, the entire contents must be used within a maximum of 60 minutes!

Apply 2 or 3 gloss coats, allowing 15 minutes between each coat.

The paint will be fully cured after 24 hours at 20°C, at which point the part can be refitted and put into service. Optimal curing is achieved after 5 to 7 days.

► Additional advice on using aerosol products:

Always spray at a right angle (90°), from a distance of 15 cm.

Primers: this product may be prone to running. Spray thick coats

Marbliser: liquid product. Shake well before use. Spray on a medium to thick coat. Excess product will cause running.

Varnish: carefully control the distance from the surface and the speed of application to ensure an even, uniform coat. The aim is to avoid running (if too much is applied) or an orange peel finish (if too little is applied)

To achieve a successful paint finish outside the spray booth, choose a dry, mild or warm day with no wind.
