Liquid masks for 3D printing – 2 types

To achieve color overlays, painters typically use adhesive tapes to mask certain areas for protection.

Liquid mask products allow for masking without adhesives on various types of 3D prints. They are more suitable for complicated surfaces, especially the shapes of printed parts. Liquid masking products are notably quicker and simpler to apply than traditional adhesives.

Unlike tape adhesives, the liquid mask prevents any paint from passing through because it instantly conforms to all shapes, crevices, and holes on the surface.

Liquid mask for airbrush and paint gun

This is an acrylic, odourless, transparent product preferably applied by spraying with an airbrush. It does not adhere to surfaces and is easy to remove.

It can be drawn on and cut very easily with a scalpel. Its transparency when dry allows the underlying coat to show through.

The sprayable liquid mask creates a very thin coat and is suitable for smooth and flat surfaces. It is particularly well-suited for 3D printed parts with simple shapes and large surfaces (e.g., Cosplay).

This product is not suitable for miniature figurines with very complex reliefs, as it becomes difficult to remove.

Nozzle : 0.35 and above

Application : Apply 2 or 3 coats to create sufficient thickness

Color : Transparent, slightly blue

Drying at 20°C : 15min / 1 coat

Flexible Liquid Mask Maskito

This is a solvent-free, semi-opaque, thick product that is preferably applied with a brush on all parts made by 3D printing.

This liquid mask is particularly suitable for 3D prints of miniatures with complicated reliefs. It is also suitable for large parts with flat and regular shapes.

Its advantages include very low adhesion to any type of surface. It does not break when removed because it is very elastic and thick.

Its disadvantage compared to the ultra-fine liquid mask is that it is challenging to cut precisely with a scalpel : the thick, flexible, and elastic consistency of its dry film makes cuts imprecise.

Nozzle : 0.8mm and above

Application : Apply a thick coat

Color : Semi-opaque, slightly blueish white

Drying : 20°C: 10min / 1 coat

Cleaning : With water
