Looking for a paint with a Gilera colour code? We offer most of the manufacturer colours listed among the Italian motorcycles colour codes, and in particular the Gilera motorcycle colour codes, thanks to our computerised formulation system for motorcycle paints.
Each of our paints is available in a solvent-based version (professional, flammable paint) intended for spray gun use or supplied in a 400ml aerosol.
The ordering method is simple on our online store :
• go to the product page below: ‘Gilera basecoat paint matt version’
• choose the packaging you need from the drop-down menu*
• then select your preferred delivery method and proceed to online payment
• indicate your Gilera colour code by email after the order, or in the box provided during checkout
*To calculate the quantity of paint you need, it’s very simple: count approximately 250ml of ready-to-use paint per 1 m².
As a guide, a complete motorcycle with minimal fairing requires 500ml, while a sports bike with extensive fairing requires 1 litre. For a touch-up on a single part (such as a mudguard or fuel tank), 250ml may be sufficient.
Of course, paint alone is not enough to complete a motorcycle paintjob. Modern matt basecoats still require a bodywork Topcoat (clearcoat). This clearcoat is resistant not only to weather and abrasion, but also to hydrocarbons. It is a two-component varnish, and it is available from us in cans or aerosols (see related products at the bottom of the page).
Gilera motorcycle colour codes
Preparing the surface before painting—whether for a touch-up or a full respray—is the most important step.
If your motorcycle has sustained a few impacts, you may need to apply a filler to the metal or even plastic parts. When there are deep scratches, it becomes necessary to apply a primer. In this case, we are not referring to an adhesion primer, but to a filling surfacer primer.
Filling primer is a thick product used to level the surface. It must be sanded thoroughly. It also provides a uniform base colour. We offer these primers in white and black, as well as in three shades of grey, formulated according to RAL colours or references.
When you place an order with a Gilera colour code, our colourist may call you if needed, to recommend the most suitable primer under your Gilera paint.
In certain specific cases, it may be necessary to apply a third coat, in addition to the basecoat and clearcoat. This is a special undercoat required for some Gilera motorcycle colours, and it is referred to as tri-coat paint.
In all cases, our team will take care of you, and our technical service is available 7 days a week by email. On your end, it is essential to thoroughly read the product presentation page, which contains all the information regarding the application of Gilera colour code paints, as well as the mixing and clearcoating process.
The history of the Gilera manufacturer
Gilera is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturing companies in Italy. It was founded in the early days of the motor industry, in the first years of the 20th century. Its founder, Giuseppe Gilera, gave his name to the company, which survived him after his death in 1971.
Gilera was the first motorcycle manufacturer to exploit new technologies at the time. In 1935, they equipped their 500cc racing motorcycles with a 60-horsepower, four-cylinder engine—then the most powerful engine of its kind—used during Grands Prix and other motorbike races, especially in 1939. At the time, Gilera engines were technologically ahead of all competing manufacturers. Their motorcycles could reach speeds of 230 km/h, which was phenomenal for the era.
Gilera operated in the large-displacement motorcycle sector, with engines ranging from 100 to 500 cubic centimetres. These engines were turbocharged and water-cooled.
The racing adventure came to a sudden end in 1957.
The Gilera company was acquired by the Piaggio group in stages, in 1969 and again in 1992. That same year, the parent company reintroduced Gilera into the world of Grand Prix racing under the Gilera name.
Where to find the colour code of your Gilera motorcycle ?
Strangely enough, there is no fixed location where one can find a Gilera colour code. It is not marked on the engine or on any part of the fairing, and it does not appear on the vehicle’s registration papers. In most cases, it is only shown in the original documentation of the motorcycle.
Without this information, it will not be possible to order the paint. It is therefore essential to find your Gilera colour code. This can sometimes be done by browsing specialised Gilera forums online, particularly Italian and American communities. As a last resort, we recommend contacting your local dealer to ask for this crucial information.
Our role as paint manufacturers is limited to producing colours from existing formulas. We have a large database of formulations, but we do not have a physical colour chart—because such a chart simply does not exist. To see what a colour looks like, we must reproduce it from the formula.
We can help you verify a code by checking its existence in our software and occasionally its availability—since not all Gilera colours have been matched. Naturally, the Gilera manufacturer does not release its colour formulas. All our matches are created one by one, based on physical samples. This means that colours for some vintage motorcycles are hard to obtain when no sample is available.
The emblematic colours of Gilera motorcycles
Among the hundreds of manufacturer colours produced by Gilera since 1950, there is no single, iconic colour that stands out.
There are both old and modern colours, which differ in being either opaque or enriched with pearlescent or metallic pigments (typically post-2000).
Generally—but not always—Gilera colour codes begin with the three letters GIL, followed by five numbers.
Each Gilera colour code is paired with a commercial name, which can also be used to find or confirm the colour.
