In the category of car paints for car parts, wing mirrors are among the most frequently damaged areas of a vehicle.
For repair or touch-up, car paints in spray or can format are ideal.
A car mirror paint is a classic 1K or 2K paint.
Repair and renovation are usually done in 3 steps:
-
Correction of scratches using filler and/or primer, followed by sanding
-
Painting the mirror
-
Application of the final clearcoat *
* In rare cases, where the colour is non-metallic and non-pearlescent, you can use a 2K paint, which does not require a clearcoat — reducing the process to two steps.
If the part only has light scratches on the paint or clearcoat surface, there's no need for primer.
Simply sand gently by hand with water to remove the scratches and create a smooth finish.
Application instructions are available on the product pages.
It is a very simple process, especially on small curved parts like wing mirrors:
– Apply 2 to 4 thin coats (vehicle colour)
– Wait a few minutes
– Then apply two nice, glossy coats of clearcoat
Car paint for wing mirrors and colour matching
When wing mirrors are scratched or impacted, the first step is to identify the correct colour code — the one corresponding to the vehicle’s unique factory paint.
Once located (usually 3 or 4 characters, numbers or letters, inside the engine bay or door jambs), you can order the manufacturer’s tint, available in 250 ml cans or 400 ml aerosols.
The code and vehicle make should be sent by email after ordering.
About the application of paint to the wing mirror
⚠️ It is generally unnecessary — and even inadvisable — to dismantle the wing mirror, due to the complexity involved.
Simply mask the surrounding bodywork with newspaper, and protect the plastics and mirror with masking tape.
All masking materials can be removed once the clearcoat has dried for 30 minutes.
Correcting major defects on wing mirrors
If the mirror has deep scratches (e.g. after scraping a wall), it is essential to fill the damaged areas with putty. Once dry, sand the putty with a coarse sanding sheet (180 to 320 grit).
⚠️ Never apply paint directly over sanded putty, as micro-defects will show through.
A surfacer primer must be applied before painting.
In the case of a plastic wing mirror
If the mirror is made of bare plastic, it is highly recommended to:
– Apply a plastic adhesion promoter
– Sand the plastic thoroughly using an abrasive sponge
This will ensure a satisfactory level of adhesion for the paint.
