RPD Technical Coating for Shower Trays – Suitable for Humid Environments

RPD 2K Polyurethane Lacquer is a high-solids, two-component paint originally developed for demanding industrial applications. Thanks to its superior mechanical and chemical properties, it is an ideal solution for finishing and refurbishing shower trays exposed daily to water, humidity, temperature fluctuations, and cleaning products.

Its anti-slip formulation—based on polyurethane resin cross-linked with isocyanates—creates a dense, tough, and durable film while maintaining excellent aesthetic stability. It is suitable for both renovation projects and new installations, provided the substrate is properly prepared.

This product is available in 625ml or 1.25L kits:

1 Liter RPD shower PU lacquer + 250ml H420 hardener

Application: Roller or brush

Mixing ratio: 100:25 (lacquer / H420 hardener)

Dilution: Max. 10% (for spraying)

Compatible shower tray substrates

This lacquer offers excellent adhesion versatility—a crucial feature in bathroom environments, where substrates vary widely. It is compatible with:

• Concrete and perfectly dry mineral substrates

• Shower trays made of resin or composite materials

• Properly prepared ferrous metals (descaled, derusted, and degreased)

• Non-ferrous metals (after degreasing and application of a suitable primer)

• Wood (prepared and sealed with an appropriate primer)

• Plastics (ABS, PP, PE) after flame treatment or application of an adhesion primer

• Polyester and gelcoat, commonly found on technical shower trays

This compatibility allows for the effective refurbishment of existing trays without requiring complete replacement, provided the preparation steps are followed.

Resistance to water, cleaning products, and daily use

In a shower environment, the coating is subjected to specific stresses: constant moisture, household cleaning products, repeated friction, and minor impacts.

The RPD 2K lacquer offers:

• Excellent resistance to chemical agents, including common cleaning products

• Proven durability in humid environments (500 hours in a humidity chamber according to standardized tests)

• High mechanical resistance, minimizing marks and micro-scratches

• Long-term gloss and color stability

The cured film, applied at the recommended thickness of 80 microns, forms a uniform, durable surface capable of withstanding the demands of a shower tray in daily use.

Aesthetic finishes available

The RPD 2K polyurethane lacquer is available in any color, allowing for perfect aesthetic integration into either contemporary or classic bathrooms.

Key technical specifications

◦ (e.g., 100g lacquer + 25g hardener)

◦ 10% dilution with our V1 thinner for spray gun application

• Pot life: 2 to 4 hours at 20°C

• Solids content of mixture: approx. 60%

• Density: approx. 1.25, depending on color

These parameters ensure controlled application and optimal film curing.

Drying and return to service

Under normal conditions (20°C, 60% RH):

• Dust-free: approx. 60 minutes

• Touch-dry: 3 to 4 hours

• Safe to handle: 6 hours

• Full cure: 7 days

For shower trays, it is recommended to wait for full curing before any prolonged exposure to water.

Specific preparation for shower trays

Coating durability depends directly on preparation:

• Thorough cleaning and degreasing

• Mechanical sanding (280 to 400 grit) to ensure adhesion

• Complete removal of any non-adherent areas

• Application of a suitable primer based on the substrate

On old gel coats or porous substrates, a preliminary sealing coat is required to prevent blistering.

Application – suitable for renovation

The lacquer can be applied via:

• Brush or roller: undiluted

• Pneumatic spray gun: 10% dilution with V1 thinner

• Airless sprayer: not recommended

Average coverage is 6 m² per litre at the recommended thickness. 

• Shelf life: 12 months in original sealed packaging

• Storage: between +5°C and +30°C, in a ventilated area
