Automotive photoluminescent paint

The StardustColors automotive paints are grouped under a range named NIGHTGLOW.

They have an excellent capacity to store the light (Many types of luminous energies, such as sunlight, electric lamp...) They can glow in complete darkness for up to 12h after having charged 30 minutes under the sun.

NightGlow is available in 400ml aerosol (paint content : 100ml)

ASPECT : By day, the nightglow paints don't show any colours, because they are colourless. But in the dark, they appear luminous and coloured .

INTENSITY : It depends on the background colour: The phosphorescence will be at its maximum over a light coloured background and almost no effect over a black background. The paints being nearly transparent, we recommend an application over a white background.

Colours :The colours have different luminosity power : we advise that you read carefully our PDF measurements chart. The strong colours are green and turquoise. All the other colours are considered less luminous.

Thickness of the coats : The intensity will be all the more higher if there are a large number of passes applied. 

Excitement : The charge time and the type of light (strong or low, broad spectrum, during a long or short time) is crucial.

Persistence : Declines as hours pass.

Temperature : Phosphorescence is increased by high temperatures, and vice versa.

TYPE OF PAINT : Ready-to-use solvent based paint (pre-diluted). Stir thoroughly before use ! Basecoat to clear for Automotive. It is possible to dilute further if necessary, with any solvent-based paint thinner

Voc : 650g/L

Application supports : Perfectly suited to many supports, raw or primed according to the rules of the art. In all cases, it is important to first apply a suitable white paint or primer :

- white base paint

- white filling primer

- white metal primer

The white bases are available here in a pot or spray

Capacity : min 2sqm / L for 4 to 5 passes

Application method : Spray gun (3 - 4 bars ~Orifice 1.2 - 1.5mm) , right after with a drying time depending on the temperature. To clear directly with any automotive topcoat.

Lifetime once applied and topcoated : up to 25 years.

Important : Photoluminescent products are only effective in a completely dark environment.

Varnishing : Important, it is necessary to varnish quickly (5 to 15 minutes recommended) after applying NightGlow paint, otherwise there may be a lack of adhesion between the paint and the clearcoat.

Stardustcolors offers a wide range of clearcoats in aerosols or complete kits.

All types of clearcoats are valid and none harm the photoluminescence.

Question :

Why does phosphorescent paint have a grainy effect when dry ?

Answer :

The paint contains micro-crystals (about 30µm). When the film is dry, it reaches between 30 and 50µm and these phosphorescent micro-crystals often stand out. Finer crystals can be used, but they shine less brightly.

We recommend applying less thin and more numerous coats, and above all, we recommend varnishing with a thick car clearcoat, with 3 coats in order to level the surface well.

Advice when planning to apply a large number of coats :

A flexibilizer is recommended for two reasons :

To avoid peeling off after impacts (on bicycles for example)

and especially because a large number of coats of phosphorescent paint (matte base) can cause cracks when drying because the paint is very dry and rich in pigments (crystals)

It is important to :

sand the white background with 400

varnish without delay to seal

add 5% of hardener to the matte base: this improves the resistance of the dry film. Adding a flexibilizer to the matte base also has positive effects on the paint's hold.

Special effect paint, compliant with Directive 2004/42/EC Annex II B (Maximum VOC contents for vehicle refinishing products and in particular special finishes of all types with a maximum VOC content of 840g / Litre)
