{"id":79,"date":"2013-02-24T22:40:44","date_gmt":"2013-02-24T20:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/blog\/?p=79"},"modified":"2021-09-24T13:04:23","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T11:04:23","slug":"2k-paints-and-1k-basecoats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/blog\/2k-paints-and-1k-basecoats\/","title":{"rendered":"2K paints and 1K basecoats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>This post concerns only sprayable paints used in automotive and design.<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>Below is a clarification for outsiders who wish to distinguish between the various names of paints used\u00a0!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lacquers-2K paints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/151-2k-paints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lacquers<\/a> or 2K paints (solvent based). *don\u2019t exist in water based version<\/p>\n<p>They are paints with a hard, resistant, \u2018glossy finish\u2019 and as such don\u2019t need to be topcoated.<\/p>\n<p>These products are polyurethane based, thick paints and are bi-component because they always go with a hardener.<br \/>\nThe hardener will allow to trigger the hardening and the drying of the paint.<br \/>\nThey can be thinned reasonably up to 15%<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/01LAQUE-NOIRE-300x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-80\" title=\"01LAQUE-NOIRE-300x300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/01LAQUE-NOIRE-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/01LAQUE-NOIRE-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/01LAQUE-NOIRE-300x300-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>Advantages:\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Time saving (they are both paint and protective clear coat)<br \/>\n&#8211; High resistance to thinners, oils, alcohols\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Disadvantages:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Very thick<br \/>\n&#8211; Long drying time<br \/>\n&#8211; Risks of sagging<br \/>\n&#8211; Once the hardener has been added, they must be used within 30mn, if not they will become \u00a0unusable<\/p>\n<p>They are mostly used for the painting of trucks\/buses and in industry.<\/p>\n<p>**********************************************************************************<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"1K basecoats\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/97-basecoat-paints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1K Paints<\/a> are available in solvent based or waterborne (water-based) versions:<\/p>\n<p>S<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">olvent based :<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThey have many names, which often leads to confusion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00ab\u00a01K basecoat\u00bb<\/li>\n<li>\u00ab\u00a0Mono-component paint\u00bb<\/li>\n<li>\u00ab\u00a01K\u00a0paint\u00bb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They have a matt aspect and must be topcoated.<br \/>\nThese paints are used mainly in automotive paint\u00a0and are called 2-coats since they are part of a two-stage system : Basecoat + Clear coat.<br \/>\nThey are mono component, meaning that no hardener is required since they dry in the air.<\/p>\n<p>When they dry they display a dull and matt aspect. Thus, it\u2019s important to be careful with liquids such as oil, thinner and alcohol.<br \/>\nClear coat is imperative<\/p>\n<p>They are ideal for the application of\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Airbrush paints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stardustcolors.co.uk\/135-airbrush-paints\"><u>airbrush paint<\/u><\/a><\/strong> which requires high precision and very fine nozzles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post concerns only sprayable paints used in automotive and design.
